| Era anticamente conosciuta come Porta Ostiensis,nome derivante dalla via Ostiense che da qui usciva..Ilnme moderno le deriva invece dalla grande basilica paleocristiana di San Paolo Fuori le Mura,che si trova piu' avanti sempre sulla via Ostiense.Da questa porta entrarono a Roma i Goti di Attila nel 544 durante la guerra goto-bizantina.Oggi all'interno dell'edificio ospita il Museo della Via Ostiense,contenente calchi,stampe,fotografie e due grandi plastici di Ostia e del porto di Traiano a Fiumicino. | |

| This place was first known as Porta Ostiensis,it owes its name to the fact that the road Ostiense was in the close vicinity of the gate .Later the gate was called San Paolo because of the Paleochristian bailica of San Paolo that was situated on the same road .Attila's Goths came into Rome through this gate in 544 , during the Goth-Byzantine war.You will find now a museum there where you can see some maps , engravings and photographs of two wonderful small scale models of Ostia and the gate of Traiano in Fiumicino. |
