Among the basilicas, this is one of the most important, after Saint Peter's, and is said to be the "Mother of all the World's Churches". It was started by Constantin at the beginning of the VIth century since he had donated a parte of the lateran palaces to Pope Melchiade (311-314). Throughout centuries it underwent several distructiond and reconstructions with the various popes that decorated it at each time to their like. But these changes enriched the interior's richness and variety and the number of art masterpieces, like Borromini, Galilei, Gentileschi and many more. A really unique sight is the basilica's absidis, all in golden mosaic in byzantin style.
