| Santa Croce in Gerusalemme may date from the 4th century, but this totally baroqued-out church does not deserve the hype it gets. That is, unless you're talking about holy relics, in which case Santa Croce can't be beat. Besides a nail and part of the inscription from the one and true Cross, there are | two thorns from Jesus' crown, plus the gangly finger that Thomas poked Christ with, all on permanent display in Santa Croce's "Chapel of the Holy Relics" to the left of the altar. The Rosa d'Oro gift shop in front sells some mean liqueuer (distilleted by monks) and honey from the Lazio region. |
